Katee Hui – Episode 24
Katee Hui is the Founder of Hackney Laces, a community football club in East London. Born and raised in Canada, she moved in 2007 to the UK to study at the London School of Economics. She began her coaching career at Arsenal in the Community, through the Islington Football Development Partnership and worked at the FA's North London Girls Talent Development Centre. After noticing a lack of opportunities for girls and women in her area to play, she set up Hackney Laces in 2011. As an FA qualified coach, she, alongside an army of other women have grown Laces into three clubs; Hackney Laces, Limehouse Laces and South London Laces. All with a single powerful mission – to provide as many opportunities as possible for for girls and women to play the beautiful game.
Katee has been recognised for her outstanding leadership in setting up Laces to be a football club that truly changes girls and women’s lives through a series of awards such as Top 100 Changemakers by The Big Issue (2019); BBC Sports Personality of the Year Unsung Hero for London (2018), a Point of Light Award by the Prime Minister for Services to the Community in 2016. As well as the London FA's Outstanding contribution to Women's Football Award in 2013 and 2015.
Outside of football, Katee works as a Strategist at Pentagram as her role at Laces is completely voluntary. Katee also oversees parkrun as a Global Trustee in addition to her role as a member of the Sector Expert Advisory Group for Kingston University's Centre for Physical Education, Sport and Activity. And if as Katee was not impressive enough, she also acts as an ambassador for Heads Together | Head's Up, The Royal Foundation's Mental health initiative.
In this episode of In Her Corner we talk to Katee about what it takes to thrive when breaking the mould in being the first, why the world of sports and social media need to come together to defend women in sport against sexist attacks and the importance of giving girls and women opportunities to play and benefit from sport.
